What is ‘How I Spend’?
How I Spend is a feature that helps you keep track of your expenses and manage your money by automatically categorising your purchases. It can help you understand where your money is going, making it easier to setup a budget and stay on top of your spending.
How we’ll use the information.
How I Spend is there to help you manage your personal finances and provide greater insight into the categories you’re spending on. We don’t pass this information onto any external parties. Read our Privacy Policy to learn more about how we use your information.
When will How I Spend be available?
How I Spend is available now through the Hiver app. If you can’t see How I Spend in the ‘accounts’ menu, you will need to navigate to ‘My settings’, scroll to 'How I Spend' and swipe to enable. It may then take a few minutes to categorise any previous spending.

How does it work?
With How I Spend each transaction is automatically categorised. To make it easier to manage your money you can:
- See what categories you're spending on.
- View the information in both visual charts and lists.
- Customise your view by choosing the year, month and category you want to see.
- View more details about the transaction by tapping on the transaction icon.
- Edit the category you’d like a transaction to be applied to. You can do for a one off transaction or apply it to all similar future transactions after that date.

How I Spend categories.
We understand everyone is different and the way each person thinks about their finances is very personal, so we’ve included categories we think will work for most people.
We’ll automatically categorise your transactions based on certain transaction information, like ‘merchant type’ and ‘merchant code’.
The merchant details we use to categorise your transactions are provided by Visa. While we do our best to make sure every categorisation is as accurate as possible, sometimes technology can have a mind of its own.
If you find a transaction has been categorised incorrectly, you’ll be able to ‘edit’ and assign it to another category.

At the moment, you're unable to create your own categories. We’re working on giving you the ability to create your own categories so keep an eye on our social media channels for any updates.

At the moment this feature isn’t quite ready. We’re working on being able to export your spend categorisation with your transaction history. Keep an eye on our social media for updates.
With Hiver, you’re in control. You can turn off How I Spend at anytime by navigating to ‘My settings’ in the menu and swiping How I Spend to ‘off’. Just know if you turn off How I Spend and decide to turn it back on later, you will lose any customisation of categories that you had previously setup.
